Provadia is a city with a rich, 15-century history, but the area was inhabited by the Thracians as early as the 5th century BC.

It is believed that the city was founded as a Byzantine fortress to defend against the invasion of northern tribes. The Byzantines called it Provat or Provaton. The Bulgarians, who settled there later, called it Ovech, most likely because of the well-developed sheep farming in that area at that time.

Ovech was used from the 3rd to the beginning of the 7th century and then from the 10th-11th to the end of the 17th century. It was originally used for defense, but then became an administrative and military center with a permanent population.

The Ovech fortress had its heyday during the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. In 1388, after a long siege, Ovech was captured by the Turkish army. The Ottomans called it the fortress of Tash Hisar (stone fortress). Later, the Bulgarian population founded the town of Provadia next to the fortress.

Ovech is an ancient stone fortress, the remains of which still tower over an impressive plateau. Over the centuries, the Ovech fortress was inhabited by Thracians, Byzantines, Bulgarians and Turks.

The Ovech fortress is truly impressive – vertical cliffs ranging from 11 to 25 meters high, a 160-meter wooden bridge that connects the land with the Tibia plateau and many other sights that will surely take your breath away. Here, the emotion will simply make you go back to ancient times, to those medieval times of Bulgaria, when they fought in a struggle for life and freedom.

It is extremely interesting to see the rock monasteries in the region of Provadia. There are about 10 of them, and one of them is located in the immediate vicinity of the Ovech fortress. A specially built bridge connects the fortress with the monastery.

The monastery in the "Shashkanite" area consists of 10 cells at a height of 30 meters in the rock massif. This monastery was inhabited in the 12th-13th centuries and was then difficult to access. Today, the site has been declared a cultural monument.
